What is GI Bleeding?

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is bleeding anywhere in the digestive tract. It can be minor or life-threatening and often requires urgent medical care.

Causes of GI Bleeding

Upper GI:

Stomach ulcers
Esophageal varices
Gastritis
Tears in the food pipe (Mallory-Weiss)

Lower GI:

Hemorrhoids
Anal fissures
Colon polyps or cancer
Inflammatory bowel disease
Diverticulosis

Symptoms of GI Bleeding

Vomiting blood (bright red or coffee-ground)
Blood in stool (black or red)
Dizziness or fainting
Abdominal cramps
Fatigue or low blood pressure
