What is a Skin Infection?

A skin infection occurs when harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites invade the skin, causing inflammation, redness, and discomfort. Skin infections can range from mild to severe, and some may require medical treatment to prevent complications.

Causes of Skin Infections

• Bacterial Invasion – Cuts, wounds, or insect bites can allow bacteria like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus to enter.
• Viral Infections – Certain viruses, such as herpes or HPV, can cause skin infections.
• Fungal Growth – Warm, moist environments encourage fungal infections like ringworm.

Types of Skin Infections

• Antiviral Medications – Used for herpes, shingles, or warts (acyclovir, valacyclovir).
• Antifungal Creams or Pills – Used for ringworm, athlete’s foot, or yeast infections.
• Medicated Lotions & Ointments – Help relieve symptoms and promote healing.
• Proper Wound Care – Cleaning and covering infected areas to prevent the spread.

Prevention of Skin Infections

• Maintain Good Hygiene – Wash hands and skin regularly.
• Avoid Scratching Wounds – Reduces the risk of bacterial infections.
• Keep Skin Dry & Clean – Fungi thrive in damp conditions.
• Avoid Sharing Personal Items – Towels, razors, and clothing should not be shared.
